2021 was a good vintage overall.
The weather conditions were very varied, with some precipitation in summer, but without causing too many vine health complications. Temperatures were fairly variable, with a warm January and a cooler than average February and March compared to previous years, followed by a warm April.
Véraison (colour change) stretched over a long period, but it concluded with very even results and the maturation period was slow, conducive to the development of aromas and the concentration of the grapes. In short, 2021 was not such an easy year weather-wise, yet excellent vineyard management was achieved thanks to the expertise of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild grape growers and winemakers, together with suitable irrigation techniques and choosing to harvest at precisely the right time.
In the end, the balance between good structure and elegance on the palate truly showcases the terroir.
The wine is matured in 25% new oak barrels and 75% two-year-old or three-year-old oak barrels for 12 months.
This wine is made entirely from the same grape variety even though the requirement under chilean law is only 75%. Cabernet Sauvignon gives balanced wines with well-rounded tannins and blackcurrant, pepper and liquorice flavours. The wines have considerable ageing potential and their structure becomes rounder with time.
Intense and fruity - Blackcurrant - Black pepper
Intense, glittering ruby red with purple highlights.
The wine has a very delicate nose, rich in aromas of berry fruit such as cherry, blueberry, cassis and blackcurrant, mingled with touches of spice and herb (pink peppercorn, sage and rosemary) and subtle notes of cedarwood, tobacco and leather from time spent in oak.
The attack is powerful but highly elegant, with good structure and volume and balanced acidity. The mid-palate is full and complex, the tannins very silky and finely textured. The long finish is marked by lingering berry-fruit flavours with hints of tobacco.
Elegance and refinement are the hallmarks of this wine, which has considerable ageing potential.
