2021 VINTAGE
2021 was a good vintage overall.
The weather conditions were very varied, with some precipitation in summer, but without causing too many vine health complications. Temperatures were fairly variable, with a warm January and a cooler than average February and March compared to previous years, followed by a warm April.
Véraison (colour change) stretched over a long period, but it concluded with very even results and the maturation period was slow, conducive to the development of aromas and the concentration of the grapes.
In short, 2021 was not such an easy year weather-wise, yet excellent vineyard management was achieved thanks to the expertise of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild grape growers and winemakers, together with suitable irrigation techniques and choosing to harvest at precisely the right time. In the end, the balance between good structure and elegance on the palate truly showcases the terroir.
MATURING
The wine is matured in 25% new and 75% 1-2-year-old barrels for 12 months.
GRAPE VARIETY
Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva is a blended wine made from five different grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon (39%) and Cabernet Franc (6%), traditional Bordeaux varieties, give refinement and tannic power, while Carmenere (39%), Syrah (9%) and Petit Verdot (7%) bring body, density and a touch of spice.
TASTING NOTES
Black fruit - Chocolate & coffee - Powerful - Generous
Aspect
Brilliant, intense ruby-red with purple highlights.
Nose
Very intense and fruity, with notes of black fruit like blackberry, blackcurrant and fig as well as dried fruit such as prune and dried cherry, mingled with delicate spicy notes of black pepper and rosemary and well-integrated hints of toffee and coffee thanks to ageing in French oak barrels.
Palate
An elegant wine which starts out seductive on the palate, with excellent viscosity and good balance between acidity, sweetness and smoothness. The elegant structure is underpinned by a silky texture. Fruity aromas such as blueberry follow through to the aftertaste, accompanied by excellent acidity, making for a long and persistent finish.
