2022 VINTAGE

2022 enjoyed very favorable conditions, allowing the grapes to ripen well.

The year started with a very cool spring, then temperatures rose gradually, particularly beneficial for creating slow ripening conditions, high aromatic intensity, a high level of concentration and great phenolic ripeness.

This vintage has great potential and perfectly expresses both the Chilean terroir and grape varieties. It boasts good typical aromas, a delicate and elegant mouthfeel with a high level of concentration, alongside great acidity and freshness.

The 2022 vintage has great balance between structure and elegance on the palate, giving complex, fresh wines with good ageing potential.

MATURING

80% of the wine is matured in French oak barrels, 10% new barrels and 90% 1-to-2-year old barrels, for ten months before bottling.

GRAPE VARIETY

Escudo Rojo Reserva Syrah is made entirely from the same grape variety even though the requirement under Chilean law is only 75%. Producing very high-quality wines, Syrah brings remarkable depth of flavour and rich tannins which improve with age.

TASTING NOTES

Nose

Very intense with notes of violets and liquorice, berries such as black raspberry, and also spicy aromas of bay leaf and rosemary, mixed with graphite and soft nuances of vanilla and tobacco thanks to barrel ageing.

Palate

Starts out superb with lots of volume and well-balanced acidity. Violet aromas and spicy nuances follow through to the long, lingering finish.

2021 VINTAGE

2021 was a good vintage overall.

The weather conditions were very varied, with some precipitation in summer, but without causing too many vine health complications. Temperatures were fairly variable, with a warm January and a cooler than average February and March compared to previous years, followed by a warm April.

Véraison (colour change) stretched over a long period, but it concluded with very even results and the maturation period was slow, conducive to the development of aromas and the concentration of the grapes.

In short, 2021 was not such an easy year weather-wise, yet excellent vineyard management was achieved thanks to the expertise of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild grape growers and winemakers, together with suitable irrigation techniques and choosing to harvest at precisely the right time. In the end, the balance between good structure and elegance on the palate truly showcases the terroir.

MATURING

80% of the wine is matured in oak and 20% in stainless steel vats, for ten months before bottling.

2019 VINTAGE

Particularly hot and dry conditions in 2019 enabled the grapes to reach optimum maturity.

Lower than average rainfall, concentrated almost entirely during the winter, combined with slightly higher-than-average temperatures ensured perfect conditions for the vine growth cycle, enabling the grapes to reach optimum aromatic and phenolic maturity.

These exceptional conditions generated natural concentration while preserving balance and refinement, allowing the grapes to achieve the purest expression of the identity of each terroir.

As a result, the wines express all the generosity and power of Chile while remaining elegant and silky.

Offering excellent ageing potential, 2019 is one of the great Chilean vintages.

2018 VINTAGE

Overall, the weather in 2018 was exceptional, bringing the grapes to optimum maturity while retaining their freshness.

The harvest was early, starting on 23 February with the Villavicencio white grapes and ending on 10 May with the Carmenere grapes. At the Maipo winery, grapes came in from 26 March to 17 May.In keeping with the average, grapes were picked 10 to 15 days later than for the 2017 vintage. The decisive factor was a period of relatively low temperatures during the end of the ripening process, from December to February. The grapes ripened more slowly as a result, allowing them to preserve an aromatic freshness sometimes difficult to attain in Chile. This was followed by excellent weather which brought the grapes to optimum phenolic maturity and heralded the start of the harvest. At this stage 2018 is a very promising vintage, combining good concentration and powerful, expressive fruit.
The power of New World wines combined with the refinement of Old World wines!

MATURING

The wine is matured in one-year-old oak barrels for six to eight months before bottling.

Palate

This succulent wine has a very good, fresh and generous attack, with good substance and balanced acidity on powerful but refined and elegant tannins which underpin harmonious fruit, violet and liquorice flavours on the mid-palate.

The long and elegant finish perfectly expresses the sheer style of Maipo Valley Syrah.

2017 VINTAGE

Particularly hot and dry weather brought the grapes to optimum maturity and shortened the maturing cycle, making 2017 an exceptionally early vintage.

Lower than average rainfall, ideally distributed throughout the growth cycle, together with the highest average temperature of the past ten years and more, made this a very Mediterranean-style vintage.
The 2017 wines are therefore generous and powerful, while remaining silky and soft.
They have a very distinctive Chilean identity, especially in the expression of fruit flavours and aromas which, combined with dense and rich mid-palates, reveal the identity of the terroirs to the full.

Producing wines with great ageing potential, 2017 is one of the great Chilean vintages.

The nose opens on subtle notes of black fruit such as blackberry and blackcurrant, followed on airing by delicate touches of oak and black pepper.

The tannic structure typical of Syrah lends attractive body and heft to the mid-palate, sustained by elegant notes of black and grey pepper, followed by a beautifully long finish distinguished by a remarkable return of fruit flavours and refined toasted notes.

2016 VINTAGE

Exceptional weather conditions in 2016 produced very interesting and distinctive wines.

Rainfall was significantly higher than during an average year, with unusually heavy precipitation in autumn. This had an impact on the vintage, giving it a marine character rarely found in Chilean wines. The greater part of the vine growth cycle took place under ideal weather conditions; however, it remains a very technical vintage, owing its success to the skills and know-how of Baron Philippe de Rothschild Maipo’s vine-growers. Highly expressive of each grape variety and terroir, the wines are balanced, fresh and elegant.

2016, an “El Niño” year, will doubtless be remembered as an atypical, singular vintage on account of its unusual rainfall patterns, the advantage of which was to preserve fresh fruit flavours and impart a certain elegance that is sometimes difficult to attain in New World wines.
