This wine comes from the best vineyards in two of Chile’s most highly reputed winegrowing areas, the Maipo Valley and the Rapel Valley. Nestling at the foot of the Andes Mountains, the Maipo Valley offers ideal conditions for growing cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and syrah. Plentiful sunshine during the day and cool nights produce a considerable temperature differential that allows the grapes to ripen slowly. Further south, the Rapel Valley has rich and well-balanced, predominantly clay-loam soil. Its water reserves ensure harmonious, stress-free growth for the vines, providing conditions in which the carmenere grape can flourish.

2018 VINTAGE

Overall, the weather in 2018 was exceptional, bringing the grapes to optimum maturity while retaining their freshness.

The harvest was early, starting on 23 February with the Villavicencio white grapes and ending on 10 May with the Carmenere grapes. At the Maipo winery, grapes came in from 26 March to 17 May.In keeping with the average, grapes were picked 10 to 15 days later than for the 2017 vintage. The decisive factor was a period of relatively low temperatures during the end of the ripening process, from December to February. The grapes ripened more slowly as a result, allowing them to preserve an aromatic freshness sometimes difficult to attain in Chile. This was followed by excellent weather which brought the grapes to optimum phenolic maturity and heralded the start of the harvest.

At this stage 2018 is a very promising vintage, combining good concentration and powerful, expressive fruit.

The power of New World wines combined with the refinement of Old World wines!

MATURING

Half the vintage is matured in one-year-old oak barrels for 12 months.

VARIETAL MIX

Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva is a blended wine made from four different grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and Cabernet Franc (2%), traditional Bordeaux varieties, give refinement and tannic power, while Carmenere (38%) and Syrah (20%) bring body, density and a touch of spice.

TASTING NOTES

The powerful, very intense and fruit- forward nose reveals a mixture of red and black berry fruit aromas, mingled with spicy notes of black pepper and subtle touches of vanilla, caramel and mocha.

Palate

From a powerful and complex attack, the medium-bodied mid-palate is underpinned by very mature tannins.

With good substance and balanced acidity, it reveals wild berry flavours, especially blackberry and bilberry.

Ripe fruit notes linger on the palate, together with a return of the spice notes found on the nose, while toasted hazelnut and roast coffee-bean flavours complete the long, rich and well-balanced finish, underpinned by elegant tannins.

2017 VINTAGE

Particularly hot and dry weather brought the grapes to optimum maturity and shortened the maturing cycle, making 2017 an exceptionally early vintage.

Lower than average rainfall, ideally distributed throughout the growth cycle, together with the highest average temperature of the past ten years and more, made this a very Mediterranean-style vintage.
The 2017 wines are therefore generous and powerful, while remaining silky and soft.
They have a very distinctive Chilean identity, especially in the expression of fruit flavours and aromas which, combined with dense and rich mid-palates, reveal the identity of the terroirs to the full.

Producing wines with great ageing potential, 2017 is one of the great Chilean vintages.

The fruit flavours found on the attack return, underpinned by beautifully refined tannins which give length and elegance to the finish.

2016 VINTAGE

Exceptional weather conditions in 2016 produced very interesting and distinctive wines.

Rainfall was significantly higher than during an average year, with unusually heavy precipitation in autumn. This had an impact on the vintage, giving it a marine character rarely found in Chilean wines. The greater part of the vine growth cycle took place under ideal weather conditions; however, it remains a very technical vintage, owing its success to the skills and know-how of Baron Philippe de Rothschild Maipo’s vine-growers. Highly expressive of each grape variety and terroir, the wines are balanced, fresh andelegant.
2016, an “El Niño” year, will doubtlessbe remembered as an atypical, singular vintage on account of its unusual rainfall patterns, the advantage of which was to preserve fresh fruit flavours and impart a certain elegance that is sometimes difficult to attain in New World wines.

2015 VINTAGE

The weather in 2015 was exceptionally hot and dry, enabling the grapes to reach optimum maturity.

Lower than average rainfall, mostly occurring during the winter, together with the highest recorded average temperature in the last 50 years or more, were the decisive influences behind the very Mediterranean style of the 2015 vintage.
As a result, the wines are generous and powerful while keeping velvet, silky texture. They display a very distinct Chilean identity, particularly in the expression of the fruit, which, combined with a concentrated mid-palate, brings complexity and richness while revealing the uniqueness of each terroir.

2015 is a vintage with excellent ageing potential.

2014 VINTAGE

2014 may be reckoned a very good vintage in Chile, due to low rainfall and ideal temperatures for the vine growth cycle.

These factors enabled the grapes to reach full maturity, producing wines which tend towards a rather Mediterranean style. Powerful and with excellent concentration, they also preserve a “fresh fruit” character and freshness sometimes difficult to achieve in New World wines. Of generally even quality, the different grape varieties perfectly reveal the identity of Chile’s terroirs.

A promising vintage with considerable ageing potential.

2013 VINTAGE

The 2013 vintage was remarkable for the even distribution of rainfall over the entire vegetation cycle.

The 2013 vintage was remarkable for the even distribution of rainfall over the entire vegetation cycle. As a result the vines were able to build up substantial water reserves, requiring much less irrigation and avoiding any water stress.

These climatic conditions enabled the grapes to reach full maturity, yielding wine with attractively fresh fruit, a characteristic sometimes difficult to achieve in New World countries. The style of the vintage is unquestionably “oceanic”, combining power with refinement and freshness in the manner of other atypical vintages such as 2005 or 2006.

2013 is a promising vintage with considerable ageing potential.

It shows all the energy of the New World together with Old World refinement!

2012 VINTAGE

Weather conditions for the 2012 vintage were very favourable, reminiscent of 2009.

The month of March in particular was one of the hottest in the last 30 years. The positive effects of the hot, dry weather in 2012 were to ensure excellent maturity of the grapes and naturally high concentration of flavour.
The wines of the 2012 vintage are generous and powerful while retaining a texture of velvet and silk. They have a definite Mediterranean cast, especially in the expression of the fruit. That ripeness, combined with a concentrated mid-palate, gives complexity and richness and expresses the full identity of the terroir.

All the charm of Chile is revealed in the 2012 wines, which have excellent ageing potential.

2011 VINTAGE

An exceptional distribution of rainfall in 2011 provided good conditions for the grapes to develop and mature.

Although the weather conditions were difficult in terms of ensuring vine health, the consequences were particularly beneficial for the wines, which display fresh fruit and elegant tannins.
A cold and dry winter followed by a cool spring with relatively little sunshine caused a 15-day lag in vine development which persisted throughout the growth cycle. Despite this lag, a hot and dry summer and a sharp difference between day and night temperatures in April favoured concentration of the fruit while preserving the freshness of the vintage in remarkable fashion.
Of great aromatic power, the 2011 vintage expresses all the refinement and freshness of the fruit while revealing a tannic structure of great elegance.

In another unusual vintage for Chile, the 2011 wines also stand out for their strong varietal identity and ageing potential.

2010 VINTAGE

A cold and dry winter followed by a cool spring delayed the early phases of the vegetation cycle by about a fortnight.

Hot and dry weather in the second half of spring and summer enabled the crop to ripen evenly.
Autumn, marked by an earthquake on 27 February, saw a fall in average temperatures and a very sharp difference between day and night temperatures, enhancing the presence of phenolic compounds. The conditions made it possible to preserve all the potential and, above all, the freshness of the fruit.
That freshness, combined with higher acidity than in 2009, gives the 2010 vintage a balance and an elegance that will indisputably rank it among Chile’s best even-year vintages, with the added advantage of considerable ageing potential.

With very hot summer weather and high temperatures in autumn, the harvest took place 15 days earlier than in 2008. Weather conditions in 2009 were particularly kind to the vegetation cycle and the maturing process, producing grapes rich in aroma and flavour with excellent sugar levels. An exceptional year, 2009 – like 2007 – is one of the finest vintages of the last decade.
